Call for Papers: IWASCL-2009 Workshop
International Workshop on "Adaptive Systems for Collaborative Learning" (IWASCL-2009). November, 4-6, 2009, Open University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain
Workshop website

IWASCL-2009 will be held in conjunction with the International Conference on Intelligent Networking and Collaborative Systems (INCoS 2009)
Conference website:

Adaptive systems for learning are computer systems that implement some form of adaptation in order to tailor the learning experience to learner's needs and preferences. For example, Adaptive Hypermedia Systems typically adapt the content presentation or navigation tools to learner's prior knowledge or cognitive/learning style.

Lately, a significant research interest has emerged on the issue of implementing adaptation methods in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) activities (see, for example, other relevant previous workshops on "Adaptive Collaboration Support" ( and "Adapting Activities Modeled by CSCL Scripts" (
Adaptively supporting groups of learners is an important aspect of collaborative learning since research has consistently emphasized that free collaboration conditions fail to engage all team members in productive learning interactions. The objective, therefore, of an adaptive system for collaborative learning (ASCL) would be to effectively model the group activity and trigger, when appropriate, some type of adaptive intervention, such as group formation, group scaffolding, adaptation of the workflow or learners' role, etc.

The scope of the IWASCL workshop is to provide the opportunity for an informal meeting which facilitates the dissemination of knowledge in the field, providing useful insights on existing state-of-the-art research. The issue of adaptively managing the collaborative learning activity can be approached from different but complementary perspectives and may be of interest for researchers of various backgrounds (learning scientists, educators, engineers/computer scientists, instructional designers, the Learning Design community). Consequently, the focus of the workshop is broad and includes methods, tools, formalization approaches, early prototype design and evaluation, pedagogical issues, etc.
We especially welcome papers that describe speculative ideas, work in progress, and discussions of important issues.

The workshop will focus on (but is certainly not limited to) the following topics:
· Theoretical issues on adaptation methods and techniques for groups of learners
· Modelling the group activity to cater for adaptive system design
· Adaptive and intelligent forms of tutoring/scaffolding/scripting in CSCL systems.
· Adaptive collaboration support
· Methods and tools for the design and operationalization of adaptive systems for collaborative learning
· Formalization efforts of the adaptive collaborative learning activity and the role of the Learning Design.
· Interaction analysis techniques to inform the adaptable and flexible behavior of CSCL systems.
· Expectations from adaptive systems for collaborative learning; cost/benefit issues, the expected impact on learners' cognitive and metacognitive level of learning.

Interested authors are invited to submit their papers in PDF format no later than July, 13, 2009.
Papers should comprise title, authors' names, postal and email addresses, an up to 150-words abstract, a 4 to 6 pages body text in double column IEEE format (according to the INCoS 2009 format guidelines and templates).
Papers should be submitted electronically using the submission system located at:

Proceedings of the IWASCL-2009 workshop will be included in the INCoS 2009 volume, to be published by IEEE Computer Society Press.
Organizers of the workshop will contact international journal editors to publish a special issue based on the workshop outcomes (more on this later...)

<to be announced>

Apart from typical paper presentation the workshop will facilitate group-discussion and argumentation.
Papers will be made available to all participants before the workshop so that they will have time to review the material and prepare their dialogue generating critical comments during the workshop.

· July 13, 2009 Paper Submission
· July 30, 2009 Notification of Acceptance
· September 10, 2009 Camera-Ready Submission
· November 4-6, 2009 INCoS Conference and IWASCL Workshop
