Over the last years, Kaleidoscope
researchers have been joining efforts to improve knowledge
accumulation in the multidisciplinary field of computer-supported
collaborative learning (CSCL). Major outcomes are three state-of-the-art
reports from a cognitive, a socio-cultural as well as a technology
& design perspective. Beyond reviewing and summarising
main research findings, the state-of-the art papers emphasise
on key future research challenges. After short presentations
of the three papers, a discussant’s statement will initiate
a discussion on state-of-the-art and future challenges in
CSCL.

Description
CIEL aims at changing
views on science education by exploiting synergy between existing
technological and pedagogical approaches to inquiry and experiential
learning. This has lead to a proof of concept in the domain
of forest management that demonstrates this active integration
by connecting heterogeneous tools in one collaborative scenario.
In this session, participants will take the role of scenario
designers, by generating and exploring the value of configurations
of tools and workflows to support advanced modes of learning.
Computer based interaction
analysis is an emerging field aiming at supporting participants
in technology mediated activities directly (e.g. offering visualized
information for selfregulation purposes) or indirectly (e.g.
adapting the environment). The purpose of the session is firstly
to outline the main theoretical concepts, methods and tools
that were developed, secondly to discuss on the prospects of
the field, and finally to reflect on the integration achieved
by the synergy of Kaleidoscope NoE scientists, during different
joint research activities.
This session will
show how Mobile Learning research has impacted upon learners,
both children and lifelong, across Europe. Working together
in the Kaleidoscope SIG has enabled us to identify three underpinning
themes to our research, those of constructivist, conversational
and collaborative learning theories. This synergy will first
be illustrated by examples of mobile learning research from
lead institutions and then demonstrated through audience participation
in an introduction to the Mobile Learning SIG's work on
futures planning.
This session will present the value produced by the European Research Team on Conditions for Productive Networked Learning Environments. Combining the excellence of 9 European research labs has lead to a synergetic collaboration, the concrete result of which is the book Analysing Networked Learning Practices in Higher Education and Continuing Professional Development, ready in preprint for the session.
The session will be organized as presentations of theoretical concepts and case studies by members of the ERT with invited researchers not part of the ERT acting as 'panel discussants'. Invited discussants are Prof. Vivien Hodgson, Lancaster University, UK and Prof. Timothy Koschmann, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, USA.

This session is organised
by the European Research Team on Educational Format. Since the
40’s, the lesson plan identifies a standard structure
of fixed elements to manage an educational activity without
taking into account the context in which learning occurs. The
concept of educational format challenges this notion. It is
intended to work as a guideline to design for learning experiences
rather than rigidly combine pre-scheduled activities. Educational
format aims to provide learning designers with a conceptual
tool for “setting the scene” to ground the joint
construction of meaning into tailored learning environments,
allowing for educators ’improvisation and students’
creation of sound educational paths.
This session will focus on the design of inquiry-support software environments for teaching and learning. Specifically, an inquiry-support software platform, namely, STOCHASMOS, will be discussed by a panel of experts in the design of technology-supported learning environments. The aim is to identify innovative features and also to propose what experts would have done differently if they were asked to re-design this environment, based on current knowledge.
STOCHASMOS is a web-based platform, which is comprised of two environments: the teacher authoring environment, in which teachers can build or customize multi-modal, web-based inquiry environments, and the students’ learning environment, where students can collect and organize data, explain their thinking, interpret data and construct evidence-based explanations. Each inquiry environment includes two parts: the Investigation area where students are given access to data-rich environments, and the WorkSpace area where students can collect evidence in support of their hypotheses and organize ideas, arguments, and explanations. The Investigation and WorkSpace areas can be enhanced by the designers of each learning environment to support students’ sense-making, monitoring, and reflective inquiry processes, so that they can respond effectively to the driving question they set out to investigate. For instance, the WorkSpace area offers templates that can help structure student
work around important ideas, such as connecting data to hypotheses. Another form of scaffolding in the WorkSpace area are prompts and articulation boxes, which are customizable at the level of access of the individual teacher.
The session will include an initial presentation of the STOCHASMOS platform and then a series of presentations by experts with their analysis of the environment, the principles they used to organize their analysis, and the main ideas that could be used by other designers of web-based inquiry-support learning environments. The audience may interact and offer comments regarding the design of STOCHASMOS. They may also discuss improvements based on principles that have been taken into account in other designs of similar-purpose online learning environments and the existing evidence that supports these principles.
Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and new means for communicating research through open archives and web 2.0 tools are challenging the traditional way of judging, disseminating and promoting scientific work. Kaleidoscope has set-up a Scientific Quality Committee with internationally recognized researchers from within and outside Kaleidoscope to work out recommendations for the TEL-area. This session will use this work as a basis upon which to discuss criteria, strategies and tools for ensuring high quality TEL research.

Computer-Supported Scripting of Interaction in Collaborative Learning Environments (CoSSICLE)
Computer-supported scripts aim at facilitating social and cognitive processes of collaborative learning by shaping the way learners interact with each other. Being embedded in the user interface, computer-supported scripts can optimally structure interaction as well as support the learners with the very activity they are engaged in. Scripts assign functional roles to learners and define the specific learning activities to engage in, as well as the sequencing of these activities. A typical computer-supported script could, for example, assign the roles of case analyst and critic among the learners, specify the order of interaction and the cases to be worked on, and rotate the
roles so that each learner gets to play each role at least once.computer-supported scripts can be applied equally well to a distributed, mobile, or face-to-face (joint use of a computer) learning setting without need for prior training or instruction.
MOSIL, a visual language for modelling

Visual learning models provide different
uses for teachers, learners, and researchers. Based on our
discussions in the ERT CoSSICLE we identify desired properties
for such modelling languages especially considering the needs
of practitioners. We also present an exemplary approach of
a visual language for collaborative learning processes that
was designed according to principles of educational psychology.

Grid technologies are capable of providing the right answers to the needs rising from the emerging ubiquitous learning solutions. This demo will show two different systems: a state-of-the-art e-learning system named IWT (Intelligent Web Teacher) and its prototype evolution based on Grid Technologies named IWT-GA (IWT Grid Aware). The comparison between the two systems will demonstrate the added value of Grid-based e-learning solutions.

Description
The purpose of this demo is to present how a virtual multiplayer game “Gate for collaboration” can be used as a catalyst for distributed teams in their shared activities. Currently there is an increasing need to create new solutions for distributed teams to ease the knowledge construction and multiplayer games could offer a rich medium for collaborators that engages players and creates a strong common context. The development of this tool is based on modern research on collaborative learning (e.g. Dillenbourg & Traum, 2006) which gives a theoretical understanding about the phenomena how a group of people understand each other. It has been pointed out that in social learning situations, such as in teamwork, the participants need an ability to view a situation from others’ perspectives. In addition, setting of common goals and coordination of activities are necessary in successful teams. The game “Gate” presented in this demonstration is a new tool developed to
stimulate these above mentioned processes. In this demonstration we present a video and results from the Gate research experiment, which was arranged in May 2007. The aim of the experiment was to study how to enhance collaboration in teams in terms of stimulating perspective-taking and coordination of activities. Twenty-four knowledge workers from different organisations played the game in groups of four to solve collaborative tasks scripted in the game environment. Afterwards, a stimulated recall reflection and individual interviews were carried out. Each game session lasted about 1-2 hours and videodata was collected inside the game world. Based on the videodata it is possible to analyse team members’ discussions with voice-over-IP (players have headphones and microphones) and the navigation of the players’ avatar figures.

The project seeks to facilitate the synergy of technology and situated study in a variety of scenarios, where students and teachers use diverse tools on a range of devices, from mobile ones (e.g wireless PDAs) to interactive blackboards, as well as desktop computers or laptops either at school, at home, or in a field trip. The project is carried out with teachers in a secondary school and SEO/Birdlife. A pilot, with the supporting technology for a set of collaborative learning activities across the curriculum (music, natural sciences, math, chemistry..) is currently in place.
Gidder is a research design project that is part of the interdisciplinary 'Digital Design' initiative at UiO. In this project, wiki and mobile phone technologies are combined to support high school students interpreting works of contemporary art across two settings, classroom and museum.
We are exploring the design and development of applications for mobile devices that are underpinned by Constructivist, Constructionist, Collaborative and Contextual learning principles. DNT and SMART are two examples of these type of applications. The DNT support the production of a film entirely shot on mobile phones. The application runs on PCs and mobile phones and it supports the collaborative generation of storyline, it generates the 'script' and it allows distributed groups of participants to 'shot' and edit in parallel by transferring media from the shooting location to the editing station through MMS.
Advanced Mobile and Ubiquitous Learning
Environment for Teachers and Students (AMULETS)
We are exploring how teachers can develop and implement novel educational scenarios combining outdoor and indoor activities that use ubiquitous computing and mobile technologies together with desktop computers. Since June 2006, fifty five elementary school children and eighteen teacher students from Växjö University have conducted outdoor activities equipped with smartphones, PDAs and GPS devices in the fields of natural science, history and geography. The educational scenarios consisted of different stages with game like features. At the end of the outdoor learning sessions, these activities can be reconstructed in the classroom using several visualization tools, including digital maps. These types of activities provide new opportunities for children, students and teachers to review learning and supporting different aspects of learning such as exploration, discussion, argumentation, collaboration and reflection.

TITLE extends existing social software applications to design enhanced narrative resources. TITLE supports a new form of collaboration to build cognitive artefacts for learning and discourse in communities.

The Cruislet environment is conceived as a digital medium for mathematically driven navigations in virtual 3-d geographical spaces containing geo-spatial information. Cruislet is actually a microworld designed to provide students with the ability to be involved in exploratory activities focusing on the development of the notion of navigational mathematics. During the demonstration, the main functionalities of the Cruislet environment will be interrelated with the use of a pedagogical scenario.
In this demonstration we present MoPiX
(http://www.lkl.ac.uk/mopix),
a mobile game-based learning environment for mathematics education.
MoPiX will allow participants at the Symposium to build, inspect,
edit, execute, monitor, and share dynamic visual models. These
models can be executed to produce animations, interactive
simulations, or small physics-based games. Learners using
MoPiX relate to equations as a means of expressing themselves
creatively. Equations empower MoPiX users to make interacting
objects move, spin, and change size, colour and shape. Objects
can leave trails as they move. Interactive applications and
games can be created containing objects whose behaviour is
a function of the state of the mouse or keyboard. MoPiX can
be used for "serious" purposes such as implementing
(and learning about) Newtonian mechanics or for playful creations
of colourful animated works of art. Collaborative creations
are well supported due to the extreme modularity of applications
built upon algebraic equations. MoPiX is part of ReMath, an
EU-funded FP6 project that aims to address the problem of
wide ranging dissatisfaction with the state of mathematics
education in Europe and the weak impact of R&D work on
using digital technologies for its improvement. For more information,

“MachineLab Turtleworlds” (MaLT) is a programmable constructionist environment which provides means for the creation and exploration of interactive simulations in 3d geometrical space using multiple linked representations and functionalities to facilitate spatial thinking, 3d visualisation, symbolic expression and dynamic manipulation of geometrical objects. The presentation of MaLT in the Kaleidoscope 2007 Symposium will be based on the presentation of its main functionalities and some exemplary scenarios concerning its educational use.
Aplusix is a new sort of software for arithmetic and algebra which lets students solve exercises and provides feedback. The demonstration will present the 4 modes of the system (training, test, self-correction and observation), the combination of commands and students’ calculations, the tools for the teachers and a tree representation of algebraic expressions to help students learn the structure of these expressions.
The purpose of this session is to highlight challenges, opportunities and obstacles for translating outstanding research results/opportunities and transferring them to the Technology Enhanced Learning industry (e.g. educational content producers, learning platform developers, training consultants, training centres, etc.).
Complementary to this, one of the discussion outcomes is likely to be the formulation of new research priorities for the TEL industry.
We aim at stimulating a dialogue among leading academics and TEL development/provision industry representatives (including SMEs) to enrich and validate research priorities and findings formulated by researchers of the Kaleidoscope network that are relevant for the exploitation of training and education products and services.
The workshop strives to discuss these and other issues related to the communication and knowledge transfer between academy and industry.
We will focus in particular on the following topics:
A shared understanding of the academic research outcomes, as well as their value and limits with respect to technology transfer and the deployment of use;
A consensus on the priorities of basic research in the context of the global competition, and the way these priorities relate to industry and users needs and expectations;
A better balance between long term research and pre-competitive R&D.
During the morning session, stakeholder representatives will work together in small groups to formulate a set of written statements on the following issues:
Relevance of the above mentioned themes to their needs and their current activity
Relevance of Kaleidoscope Scientific Vision to their activities
Ways to improve communication stakeholders' participation to the formulation of research priorities
Suggestions for improving communication and enhancing the impact of TEL research
Expectation on new pathways for research developments relevant for the TEL industry (including SMEs).

Research is needed to address professional learning and training, based on highly realistic and interactive simulations, microworlds and role-play environments, allowing a deep immersion in virtual and/or augmented reality, providing access to the acquisition of embodied knowledge.
Research must contribute to the "decompartementalization" of learning practices and examinations and assessment either at school, or in the work-place, or to validate informal learning.
It is fundamental to focus on the most suitable combination of Collaborative, Mobile and Inquiry Learning to promote lifelong learning
Innovative ways of validation of informal and non formal technology enhanced learning should be identified
How to make TEL environments more effective to support the development of low literacy, linguistic, and numeracy skills?

In 1983 he was appointed to the chair of behavioural sciences at the Department of Communication Studies, Linkoping University. He has served as dean of faculty at Linkoping University, as vice-rector at Goteborg University and as member of many Scandinavian research funding agencies.
He has been a visiting scholar/visiting professor at several universities in different countries, including a Universitat Konstanz (where he was an Alexander von Humboldt-Fellow), University of California San Diego, Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht, Georg-Augustus-Universität,
Göttingen, Université de Neuchâtel, Oslo University and the University of Turku.
In 1995 he was a scholar at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences (SCASS) at Uppsala. His international work includes serving as member of board and chairman of the Nordic Academy of Graduate Studies (NorFA) in Oslo,
and participation in numerous EU activities in the field of education and the uses of technology in education. He is currently president of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI), the biggest organisation in its field outside the US.
Dr. Säljö specialises in research on learning, interaction and human development in a sociocultural perspective, where he has published extensively. Much of his work is related to issues of literacy and numeracy, and to how people through interaction acquire
competences and skills that are foundational to learning in a socially and technologically complex society. In recent years, he has worked extensively with issues that concern how the so-called new technologies transform human learning practices inside and outside formal schooling.
In this field, he has been responsible for the national research program, LearnIT, funded by the KK-foundation. This program runs until 2007 and it includes a research school (where about 15 students have passed their Ph. D.s, about 15 research projects, international seminars,
and numerous other activities). The total sum allocated to this program by the KK-foundation is around 130 MSEK (about € 14 million). Dr. Säljö has also been engaged in interdisciplinary work with colleagues from a range of different disciplines including medicine (in particular clinical pharmacology), various natural sciences, linguistics and several others.
Dr. Säljö has supervised 28 Ph. D. students to their
degrees in different faculties. He has been involved in about 60 appointment
committees for chairs and lectureships in various institutions in Sweden and
abroad (Norway, Finland, UK, US. etc.). He is the member of the editorial
board of about 15 international journals, including Culture & Psychology
(Sage), Journal of Applied Linguistics, Instructional Science
(Elsevier), International Journal of Educational Research, and Learning
and Instruction (Elsevier). He has also served as an editor of Learning
and Instruction for six years. Dr. Säljö has also received various
awards including The Sweden-American Foundation Scholarship for Advanced Studies
in The United States, 1988. (University of California at San Diego), The Erik
Fernström Fellowship by The University of California, 1989, the EARLI
Oevre Award for scientific contributions to the field of learning and instruction,
1999. In 2007 he was awarded the distinction of Finland Distinguished Professor.
Technologies and the Transformation of Learning: from Rock Paintings to Digital Tools

When attempting to understand human learning and development, we can turn in different directions. We can look at the human brain, at human intellectual capacities, at our language capacities and at various other factors. In this lecture, the focus is on the interaction between human reasoning and external artefacts, i.e. technologies. One of the most central features of the human species is our ability to objectify and externalise our experiences by designing artefacts. Largely through materialising our insights into images, texts and other kinds of artefacts, we can build up gigantic social memories that can be shared in society and communicated across time and space. The design of these representational tools and systems will be decisive in shaping the human mind and the manners in which we reason. Literacy and numeracy are such cases in point. The current development of digital technology implies that the division of labour between human reasoning and material culture undergoes a number of changes. Our reliance on external representations increases, and the tools become more integrated into our communicative and intellectual practices. Following this development, our interpretations of human learning and human cognitive skills will change.
Francesc Pedró joined the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) in Paris (France) in 2005. In his capacity as senior policy analyst, he is the principal administrator of the New Millennium Learners Project (www.oecd.org/edu/nml). He is also in charge of the reviews of educational R&D in OECD countries and a new project on Systemic Innovation in Education, which includes one strand on vocational education and training and another on digital learning resources.
Francesc (born in Barcelona in 1960) got his MEd degree from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a PhD in Comparative Education from UNED in Madrid). Later he did a postdoc in Comparative Education at the University of London Institute of Education. Francesc was formerly professor of comparative education and public policy at the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) and academic director of its program for educational quality. Prior to that, he acted as pro-vicechancellor of educational research and innovation at the Open University of Catalonia (Barcelona), the first Internet-based European public university.

Magdalena got her BA in Sociology from the Pontificia Universidad Católica
of Chile and a MA in Social Sciences of Education from Stanford University,
USA. The last years she has worked as a consultant in technology and education
issues for the OECD, the Ministry of Education of Chile and other institutions
in Chile. Formerly she acted as evaluation and studies coordinator at Enlaces,
the Education and Technology Center of the Ministry of Education of Chile
and prior to that as research and teaching associate in the Department of
Sociology at the Pontificie Universidad Católica of Chile.
Dr. Vanda Luengo
Dr Vanda Luengo is Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University Joseph Fourier. She has a Master in didactics and a PH.D in mathematics and computer science. She is the leader of the project TELEOS (Technology Enhanced Learning Environment for Orthopaedic Surgery), funding by the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). The principal interests of her current research are the forms of knowledge associated with the training in orthopedic surgery, the models which can represent them and the computer representations which derive from this modeling for produce a diagnosis and adapted feedback. She has authored around 30 peer-reviewed papers and was participate in several program committee of the TEL conferences (EIAH, AIED, ITS). She was organizer of the first and second French CNRS summer school in TEL systems.
Prof. Frank Fischer
Frank Fischer is professor of Education and Educational Psychology at the Ludwig‑Maximilians‑Universität, Munich, Germany and was formerly professor of Research on Learning and Instruction at the University of Tuebingen and head of the research unit "Collaboration Knowledge Construction" at the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen. His research revolves around collaborative knowledge construction in interactive learning environments. In recent research projects he focused on facilitating collaborative knowledge construction by means of computer‑supported socio‑cognitive scaffolding
(e.g., computer‑based collaboration scripts) in school and university contexts. In an ongoing research project he investigates the complex interplay between external and internal representations in collaborative learning environments. An additional research focus is on training of complex skills using case-based and inquiry environments in higher and further education. With respect to methodology, he is interested in contributing to the development of a use‑inspired basic research approach in the field of learning and instruction.

Doctoral School, and in steering and leadership activities. He is director
at InterMedia at University of Oslo (http://www.intermedia.uio.no/people/home/stenl/stenl).
Sten Ludvigsen (22.10.59) received his PhD at the University of Oslo based on a study of learning in medical institutions. He is educated in educational sciences (education psychology) and he has specialized in research about how to use digital learning resources and the relationship between co-located and distributed settings, in the educational sector and in workplace setting. He leads the research group for Net-based learning and the research group for socio-cultural studies in ICT and learning. He is involved in PhD teaching and supervision, and has published more than 60 articles, papers and book chapters the last eight years. He has been a visiting scholar/professor at University of Pittsburgh and Stanford University. Sten Ludvigsen is also involved as part of the InterMedia team in several EU-projects in the IST program.
Prof. Diana Laurillard
Diana Laurillard is Professor of Learning with Digital Technologies at the London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education, and on the Executive of the EU Kaleidoscope Network of Excellence in Technology Enhanced Learning. She was previously Head of the e-Learning Strategy Unit at the UK Government’s Department for Education and Skills, and on the Visiting Committee on IT at Harvard University. Prior to that, she was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for learning technologies and teaching at the Open University. Her research is the substance of her book Rethinking University Teaching: A conversational framework for the effective use of learning technology. She is currently on the Boards of the Observatory for Borderless HE, the Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies at the University of Cambridge, and the UNESCO Institute for IT in Education in Moscow, and is an external examiner at the University of Oxford.
Comparative Evidence about the New Millennium Learners

The OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation has recently started a new project, the New Millennium Learners, intended to investigate the new generation of learners and understand their expectations and attitudes. The impact of digital technologies on cognitive skills and on learning expectations, and the evolution of social values and lifestyles are all important issues that need to be addressed. This speech will present some of the comparative evidence regarding the emergence of this phenomenon across OECD countries and its implications both for educational practitioners and policy makers.
Prof. Barbara Wasson
Professor Dr. Barbara Wasson is Professor of Pedagogical Information Science at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen, Norway, Scientific Leader of InterMedia, and a founding partner of eNOVATE AS. She is one of the founders of Kaleidoscope, a European Network of Excellence on Technology Enhanced Learning and has been leader of its CSCL SIG with over 400 members.
Wasson is leading/has lead several Norwegian national ICT and learning projects such as TRANSFORM (Transformation of Production Learning Practice), DoCTA (Design and use of Collaborative Telelearning Artefacts) and Collogatories (on blogging), BITEIT(ICT-based assessment for the Ministry of Education) and has lead UiB's participation in numerous EU 5th and 6th a framework projects. Within the University of Bergen Wasson has been active in the promotion of ICT and learning and has been involved in a number of internal projects focused on the design or evaluation of the use of ICT in university education.
She is an associate editor of the International Journal of Computer Support for Collaborative Learning and on the editorial boards of the Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. and the new book series on Technology Enhanced Learning. (Sense). Currently she serves on the CSCL Board in the ISLS association and on the board of the ICT Programme VERDIKT at the Norwegian Research Council that determines how National ICT research funds will be used for the next 10 years. In 2003 she obtained the contract for InterMedia to develop the ICT-based National test in English for the Norwegian Ministry of Education. In December 2004 she attended, by invitation only, a research summit to launch the international research initiative on Youth, Technology and Learning at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Wasson has over 65 publications on Technology Enhanced Learning. Her research interests include computer support for collaborative learning, socio-cultural theories of learning, design-based research, methodologies for studying virtual environments, mobile learning, and pedagogical agents. Her speciality is the design and evaluation of collaborative learning in distributed settings.
Roger Blamire
Roger Blamire has been Senior Manager, Policy and Practice at European Schoolnet (EUN) since February 2000, working in Brussels and the UK. EUN is a consortium of ministries of education and school networks across 28 countries. Current work revolves around education policy analysis, impact evaluation and validation, pedagogical innovation, peer learning, leadership and evaluation, and marketing and communication. He also provides expert consultancy on technology in schools, research evidence and strategic development to, among others, the European Commission, education ministries, British Educational Communications and Technology Agency, OECD and the Overseas Countries and Territories Association.
He has designed and managed many successful European Commission funded projects relating to research into school piloting of new technologies, schooling scenarios, research networks, peer learning between educationalists and policy-maker, analytical frameworks for ICT innovation and internet safety for children, writing extensively on these and other topics. Other recent tasks have included managing the EUN's Policy Innovation Committee and acting as conference director for key events including the annual EMINENT conferences.
Before taking up this position, he was a manager at the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency. His career began as a teacher of French and German after a time spent in France at Montpellier University teaching English and linguistics. Married with two grown up children Roger lives in Worcestershire UK.
Claudio Dondi
Claudio Dondi, born in Modena in 1958 and an industrial economist as a university background, is the President of SCIENTER - a non-profit research organisation based in Bologna and active Europe-wide in the field of innovation of education and training systems - since its establishment in 1988. In this position his main activities are the co-ordination of large national and European projects, as well as policy advice and evaluation at regional, national and international level. His other positions include: Member of the Board of the MENON EEIG (enabling eLearning) in Brussels, Member of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Educational Technology, Vice-President of EIfEL - the European Institute for e-learning and President of EFQUEL - the European Foundation for Quality in eLearning. From 2001 to 2006 he has been Vice-President of EDEN - the European Distance Education Network.
Prof. Roberto Carneiro
Roberto Carneiro is a former Portuguese Minister of Education (1987-91). Currently, he is a professor at the Portuguese Catholic University, where he also chairs the Study Centre on Peoples and Cultures and is Dean of the Institute for Distance Learning. Among several public responsibilities Roberto Carneiro runs the Observatory of Migrations and the Observatory for the Information Society in Portugal.
In the international context, Roberto Carneiro was Vice-President of the Information Society Forum, Vice-President of the Study Group on Education and Training, Chairman of the 5-year assessment panel of ESPRIT, Chairman of the Interim Evaluation Panel of INFO 2000, Member of the EU/US co-operation Committee e-learning research network, Member of the 2nd Section of the eEurope 2005 Steering Group. At present, he is a Member of ISTAG - Information Society Technologies Advisory Group, of the eLearning Committee, of the Lifelong Learning Stakeholder Group, and Chair of the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Education and also of eLearning Papers. He was a member of the UNESCO International Commission for Education in the 21st Century and consults extensively with major international and multilateral organizations (UNESCO, OECD, EC, World Bank, Council of Europe, etc.). In the business world he chairs holding companies in the areas of digital content, new learning and new media.
Roberto Carneiro is a graduate of the Lisbon Technical University, conducted his post-graduate studies in the UK (New University of Coleraine and London School of Economics) and is a Presentation Fellow of the King's College (University of London).

A society transformed by and through new technologies, new types of artifacts, new divisions of labor and new arenas and institutions will create new conditions for learning. However what this really means needs to be unpacked and studied at the level of interaction where the learning is actually taking place. New digital resources often create a kind of tension, break down or rupture in student practices, which in turn, creates the potential for learning opportunities where new activities emerge. Breakdowns challenge the boundaries between social and cultural organizations and the technologies that are involved. The challenge for students is to develop meta-communicative and meta-cognitive competence to interpret and orient themselves towards the many and diverse demands and requirements that are situation and context specific. In this talk I will look what these trends mean for how we approach the field of technology enhanced learning.

Online peer discussions are used to support collaborative knowledge construction in educational contexts. Ideally, concepts are being elaborated and ideas can be refined through argumentation, both on a social level and on a cognitive level. Research has just begun to identify regularities in the complex interplay of discourse, cognition, and technology.
From a collaboration script perspective, knowledge construction in groups is partly guided by internal collaboration scripts, i.e. procedural knowledge on collaboration represented in the individual participants' minds. External collaboration scripts are instructional scaffolds for guiding groups through complex patterns of interaction. External scripts specify activities and roles, and assign them to individuals in a group. External scripts are needed when internal scripts are inappropriate or too heterogeneous in one group to result in beneficial interaction. This talk will give an overview on a series of conceptual, methodological, and empirical investigations into
the interplay of internal and external collaboration scripts with respect to collaborative processes, cognition, and learning outcomes in online discussions. In one study, cognitive processes during collaboration were analyzed with a think-aloud method in an asynchronous scenario to find out to what extent external scripts and the contributions of the learning partner act as stimulation for deeper cognitive processing. In another study, we investigated how internal scripts and computer-supported external scripts co-regulate argumentation in a web-based science learning environment. Together with computer linguists, we started to automatically analyze online discussions as a basis for more adaptive external scripts that can be faded in and out, depending on the internal collaboration scripts of the participants.

If educational leaders and policy-makers are to envisage a future role for technology in education, then the research community should have something coherent to offer that helps to shape that vision.
The session will outline the main issues developed for the Scientific Vision statement for the Kaleidoscope NoE. It has been developed as a collaborative process, involving many researchers and experts across the Network.
However, a Vision Statement in a field like TEL must be continually renewed. This session is an opportunity, therefore, to propose to the Stakeholders of the TEL research field our vision, and to debate its value and coherence for research users. The majority of the session will be conducted as buzz-groups with plenary discussion. This will enable the 2nd edition of the Kaleidoscope Scientific Vision statement to be developed with the benefit of input from the wider Stakeholder community.
Knowledge Design Centred for TEL Systems

Currents research in, for example, CSCL, User centred design and Educational Model languages-EML proposes the design of Technology Enhanced Learning systems centred on an analysis of the activity. This presentation will take a perspective based on the design of TEL systems centred on knowledge. It will focus on why it is necessary to take into account knowledge and will show how some important questions related to Technology Enhanced Learning could be answered if this point of view was assumed. It will go on to show how this knowledge point of view can be taken into account in the design of TEL systems and finally will present some computer science and didactic research questions in this domain.
