The second TELEARC award, addressing PhD excellence, will be delivered on the occasion of the 2011 edition of the Alpine Rendez-vous. PhD students and their supervisors are invited to express their candidature by February the 20th, following the procedure here after described.
The Alpine
Rendez-vous is an event, legacy of the Kaleidoscope Network of Excellence,
now funded by STELLAR, the FP7 European Network of Excellence on Technology-Enhanced
Learning. It is a set of independent workshops held in the same place during a
week. The 2011 edition of the Alpine
Rendez-vous, will held from March the 27th to the 31st in La
Clusaz. It is organized jointly with the JTEL summer school. Again a special
attention will be given to "Orchestrating learning", "Connecting
Learners" and "Contextualizing learning".
The Technology Enhanced Learning European
Advanced Research Consortium (TELEARC) has been created with the mission to
keep on the legacy of the Kaleidoscope NoE. Its key objectives are: to contribute
to the shaping of the scientific evolution of technology enhanced learning, to
strengthen the scientific collaborations between research teams and foster
integration of European research teams in the field of technology enhanced
learning, to promote the excellence of European research in the area of
technology enhanced learning, and to raise awareness in the area toward the
scientific community, policy-makers and the general public. Among the activities
of TELEARC there is a PhD award which first edition, in 2009, was won by Dr. Gorgojo Guillermo Vega from the
University of Valladolid (Spain). The
second TELEARC award, addressing PhD excellence, will be delivered on the
occasion of the 2011 edition of the Alpine Rendez-vous. PhD students and their
supervisors are invited to express their candidature by February the 20th,
following the procedure here after described.
Submission
Only
work from European laboratories that had been published or presented within the
last 24 month is eligible. Submission must include the name of the nominating
person, the name of the nominee and a statement of max. 500 words on why the
submitted product should be considered for the TELEARC award.

Criteria
The
specific criteria are that a European PhD student (or team thereof) or a
non-European researcher and/or developer that has carried out her or his work
at a European institute has, through her or his work:
(1) advanced
present knowledge in TEL through originality in theory and/or methodology or
has designed, developed and/or implemented an innovative TEL environment or
tool;
(2) made
innovative use of methods, extending the approaches available to conducting
research and/or development in the TEL field;
(3) integrated
research and theory grounded in a variety of intellectual traditions into his
or her own research and/or development; and
(4) suggested particularly
insightful implications for improving practice, design or has generated or
extended theory in potentially useful ways for researchers, practitioners,
developers or designers.
Key aspects that will
be used in the evaluation of the work The primary
evaluation criteria are clarity and relevance of: (1) purpose or objectives,
(2) conceptual, theoretical, or design framework, (3) research and/or design
approach/methods
For
research only:
(1) data
sources and methods of analysis
(2) findings
or results
(3) conclusions
and implications
(4) significance
of the study.
For
design and/or development:
(4) originality
and/or grounding in previous work;
(5) utility,
usability and usefulness of the environment or tool based upon well stated design rationale;
(6) findings
or results;
(7) conclusions
and implications; and
(8) significance
of the environment or tool for advancing learning in and/or design of TEL environments.
If
the nominated work is non-empirical in nature, then other criteria apply, such
as:
(1) Does the
author present arguments and counter arguments?
(2) Is the
presentation systematically and well- reasoned?
(3) Is there a
logical and rational flow in the argumentation?
(4) Are the
range and scope of literature and opinions presented and referenced in an
appropriate way?
