LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY announces a position as PhD student (Licentiate) in Cognitive Science at the Department of Computer and Information Science. The position involves design, development and implementation of educational games including intelligent interactive agents, capable of dialogue. User-centred approaches guide the development.
The Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA), Sweden, is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe with 195 employees, 63 faculty members and 24 full professors.
Cognitive Science at Linköping University as part of the Department of Computer and Information Science pursues research in several areas of cognitive science, such as: cognition and communication, e.g. improvisation in crisis management, micro world studies and team situation awareness; social and emotional responses to speech systems, in particular in-vehicle voice systems; cognitive architecture in light of recent advances in distributed and situated cognition; educational games with virtual pedagogical agents that incorporate artificial intelligence and natural language dialogues.

QUALIFICATIONS
As a PhD student you have to be admitted to PhD studies. This requires a university degree as Master or equivalent degree in cognitive science or some of its sub-areas. In addition excellent programming skills are required.
The research team that the applicant will be part of is multidisciplinary and situated in national as well as international research networks; thus an ability to work in a team is required.
A background in one or several of the domains of educational science, artificial intelligence and dialogue systems is desirable.
APPOINTMENT TIME
Appointment time is one year at a time. A person who has been appointed and who successfully follows his/her study plan has priority to prolongation of the appointment. The total time can not exceed a period which corresponds to more than 2 years (full time) for licenciate. Starting date 1 April 2011.
