About Digital Language Learning
This is an extension of our previous work,
designing a model for learning a language through digital means
(Digital Language Learning, DLL). This work integrates Natural
Language Processing (NLP), Computer Corpus Research and Language
Didactics, and demonstrates how these tools can significantly enrich
the DLL experience.
Issues this activity addresses
Whereas our previous work was fully centered on a crucial aspect of DLL
(viz the contribution of Natural Language Processing and Computer
corpora to Computer-Assisted language learning), the current objective
of this Digital Language Learning project is more broad. It aims
to integrate other key issues, including:
Learning Management Systems and Language Learning
Mobile language learning environments
Language games
Automated generation of activities for language learning
Error detection and feedback
Electronic dictionaries
Adaptive language testing
Automatic discourse analysis
Contributions to the field
An exploratory workshop will be organized in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium)
in October 2007, where leading experts will be invited to present what
they consider to be the main challenges in the field and their role in
future research. We will produce a survey of the field that outlines
the current and future challenges to DLL. In addition, we will set up a
dedicated website on the Kaleidoscope website which will contain some
key resources, including an extended bibliography and a research
repository.
