Niels Pinkwart described the COLDEX project, undertaken with colleagues from Duisburg-Essen as well as UNED in Spain. COLDEX was a European Commission research project under Framework Programme 5, with the goal to facilitate and support learning communities. It blends live and remote experimentation in the area of space exploration.
Technically, the project used the Coolmodes collaborative modeling environment which uses shared workspaces and includes the ability to make freehand annotations. Hardware included PDAs and remote control of a telescope.
A Learning Object Repository was created by UNED. This included web-based access as well as access embedded right in the tools that students used. This meant they could upload the current document being worked on, or submite a query based on the current document, right from within the tool environment.
