Computer-Supported Collaboration in a Scripted 3D Game
Haemaelainen/Haekkinen/Jaervelae/Manninen, University of Oulu (FI)

Games are known to be more engaging, and this team from Oulu created a game for teacher training. It was a collaboarative game, enhanced with speech. Scripting was hidden behind the story, which balanced gameplay and learning outcomes.

The researchers collected audio and video, as well as 'video' from a virtual camera embedded in the game. They found that scripting enhanced collaboration during the game. Players initially tried to solve the given tasks alone, but the tasks required collaboration in order to be solved.

Overall, players felt that the game environment helped them become a team - even a team that, in fact, didn't collaborate very well.
