Featured Topic: Cognitive Load Theory and Multimedia Learning (Deadline 4 Feb.)
INVITATION:
The Teaching with Technology' Research Symposium at New York University is an opportunity to share diverse research in the field of educational and instructional technology. This 2-day event will bring doctoral students, researchers and faculty from across the country and around the world to New York City in the Spring of 2006 to present both completed and nearly-completed research and projects.
MORE INFORMATION (requirements, fees, schedule, venue information):
We will be discussing the developments that are being achieved in the important area of 'ambient technology'. Let's
rethink how we can use computers in the future, how we interact with
them, how we can take advantage of the technology of tomorrow.
Please do not hesitate to send request of information to msriepi@microsoft.com if you have any question.
From 06 April 2006 till 07 April 2006 Location: Leiden, Netherlands
Kaleidoscope members P. Robert-Jan Simons of Utrecht University
(Netherlands) and Angela McFarlane of Bristol University (UK) are the
two keynote speakers. The themes are lifelong learning, the 'net
generation,' and games.
Conference: Thursday 6 April 2006
Research Seminar: Friday 7 April 2006
From 06 April 2006 till 07 April 2006 Location: Valkenburg aan de Geul, Netherlands
The workshop aims to explore new developments in the field of
developing and implementing interoperable e-learning systems, providing
an overview of current work in the area.
ore information and the call for papers are available at:
From 06 April 2006 till 11 April 2006 Location: San Francisco This year's theme is "Education Research in the Public Interest." Several Kaleidoscope members are participating.
At the annual conference of the American Educational Research
Association (AERA), Kaleidoscope members Nicolas Balacheff, Sten
Ludvigsen, Frank Fischer, Ton de Jong, and Mike Sharples are
participating in a session entitled, "Collaborative Learning, Inquiry
Learning, Mobile Learning, and Their Synergy: A Perspective from
Europe."
The session will offer attendees an overview of the scientific
programme of Kaleidoscope, targeting scientific cooperation in
disciplines ranging from technology to education. The meeting points
are (1) the design of tools to trace and understand learner activity
(2) the search for scripts and scenarios likely to make learning more
productive and (3) mobility, which opens new perspectives on informal
learning.
Pierre Dillenbourg and Frank Fischer are participating in a session
entitled, "Screening Scripting: Exploring Various Forms of
Computer-Supported Scripting for the Optimization of Collaborative
Learning."
This session brings together researchers who are active in designing
computer-supported scripts and evaluating their impact in online
collaborative learning settings. Computer-supported scripts can
be designed to facilitate collaborative learning by a broad scope of
features and may facilitate different kinds of dimensions of a
discussion (and thus facilitate different kinds of interaction
patterns) than collaborative learning that occurs spontaneously.
From 10 April 2006 till 12 April 2006 Location: Lancaster, UK
Kaleidoscope partner Lancaster University, in association with
Kaleidoscope, is running this conference, and Kaleidoscope member Sten
Ludvigsen of Intermedia Oslo is one of the invited speakers. Find
details here.
A Kaleidoscope workshop organized within the framework of the TALN 2006 conference.
Submission deadline: 20 January 2006. The TALN 2006 style files are available at http://www.taln.be/index.php?lang=fr&page=96
The workshop that we propose to organize within the framework of TALN 2006 will enable researchers from
NLP (Natural Language Processing) and CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) to present their research on the use of NLP in language learning, to encourage exchanges and collaborations, establish a common area of study, draw a map of the projects in the fields and open up new research avenues.
From 19 April 2006 till 21 April 2006 Location: Amman, Jordan Kaleidoscope members will present research at the First International
Conference on Interactive Mobile and Computer Aided Learning.Kaleidoscope members will present the following papers:
A General Framework For Adaptive Mobile Learning
Ichraf Tirellil, Rim Drira, Mona Laroussi, Alain Derycke, Henda Ben Ghezala
An Algorithm for Web services’ composition in a mobile and a collaborative scenario of learning
Ichraf Tirellil, Mona Laroussi, Alain Derycke, Henda Benghezala
M-LEARNING AND MOBILE KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

From 20 April 2006 till 22 April 2006 Location: Bristol, UK
Kaleidoscope member Rosamund Sutherland, of the University of Bristol, is one of the organisers of this conference.
Can real-life learning fire our imagination about 21st century schools ?
An international conference at University of Bristol, Graduate School
of Education & Institute for Advanced Studies Education is
preparing young people for the future - and that means for a learning
life. Not all go to university; not all get good qualifications. But in
this uncertain, entrepreneurial world, every last one will need to be
good at learning. But what does that mean?
What does real-life learning actually involve? And how can schools
coach students more effectively in the skills and attitudes of
real-life learning?
This conference gets well-known figures from many walks of life to
reflect on their learning lives, and invites all those interested in
the practical future of education to muse on what these stories might
mean for teaching and learning in schools and colleges. Ex-Secretary of
State for Education Estelle Morris talks about her learning life with
UK government Culture Online guru Prof Jonathan Drori. Scientist Lord
Robert Winston opens up to BBC2's Rough Scientist Prof Kathy Sykes.
England goalkeeping legend Ray Clemence and award-winning England
Cricketer Mark Alleyne discuss learning in sport with FA Youth Coach
John Allpress. British Chess Champion Jonathan Rowson reflects on his
learning journey with Prof Guy Claxton. A household name actor (watch
this space!) will talk with Bristol theatre expert Prof Martin White.
And up-and-coming Bristol youth band The Naturals play music and talk
about their learning with Prof Martin Hughes.
In addition there are keynotes and on-going reflections from Harvard's
Prof David Perkins, Stanford's Prof Shirley Brice Heath, and Director
of UK think-tank Demos Tom Bentley. And there will be plenty of
opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and experience too.
This Learning Life is organised by Profs Guy Claxton and Rosamund
Sutherland and colleagues in the University of Bristol's Graduate
School of Education, and Prof Martin White, Provost of the Institute
for Advanced Studies. It is sponsored by The Lifelong Learning
Foundation, The Esmee Fairbairn Trust, the DfES, the General Teaching
Council and TLO Ltd.
From 24 April 2006 till 28 April 2006 Location: Damascus, Syria
Several Kaleidoscope members are on the Program Committee
This workshop will take place in conjunction with :
2nd IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGIES: FROM THEORY TO APPLICATIONS (http://ictta.enst-bretagne.fr/)
The aims of the workshop are to investigate the various pending issues and how elearning has the potentials benefits when dealing with speed and volume of disseminated knowledge, facilitating skills and knowledge acquisition, providing flexible learning opportunities to students, employees and citizens, personalizing the learning process and taking into account individuals and different learning strategies, and creating new interactions within groups and communities.
