Online learning means both learning by using the Internet with its hardware/software infrastructures and learning within social networks, that is interacting with a given socio-cultural context to build one’s own competencies.

Research in education and technology can seem impenetrable, even detached from how findings can be applied within educational settings.

Paul Davey (Kaleidoscope dissemination team) reports from some workshop sessions and presentations at the recent Kaleidoscope Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) Alpine Rendezvous, which looked at how classrooms have evolved over the years, and why we might now peek back a few centuries for inspiration. (CSCL is a sub-field of technology enhanced learning that investigates social interactions between learners in education settings).

It seems there is the continuing need for researchers within fields of education technology to come together from all disciplines and tackle issues at higher social, economic, and political levels.

The winners of three major European awards for outstanding research, design and development in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), established by the Kaleidoscope special interest group CSCL, were presented at the recent Alpine Rendezvous, in Villars, Switzerland. These awards are a sustainable outcome of Kaleidoscope, and will continue in 2008. (read)
